The Arab Open University
The Arab Open University (AOU) is a non-profit university founded in 2002 in Kuwait, Jordan, and Lebanon, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and soon in Oman (new campuses are expected to open in Palestine and Yemen) by HRH Prince Talal Bin Abdulaziz, who promoted the concept of the Arab Open University as a personal initiative.
The main goal of the AOU is to provide a true pan-Arab higher education institution for the widest possible number of learners across the Arab World: the establishment of the AOU is based on the concepts and themes of Open Learning.
It offers degree programs in English language and literature, Computer Sciences, Business Administration and Educational Studies. The university is accredited with local Ministries of higher education and Scientific Research as well as the British Open University.
The mission of the AOU, as an Arab institution of higher education is guided by the following general goals and objectives:
- Promote an open system of higher education that provides open opportunities of studies for professional development and lifelong learning
- Adopt the highest standards of excellence in the qualification and training of its students; and in the stimulation of work generated by its faculty and staff
- Produce graduates who are capable of embracing current and emerging technologies, and who are competent in working in a global economy
- Foster an environment of intellectual development in pursuit of research and academic service for the good of Arab and human societies
- Instils in its students the spirit of upholding deeply rooted social and ethical values of the Arab-Islamic heritage, and an appreciation and respect for the human cultures and Heritages
The affiliation with the UK Open Univeristy covers the following agreements licensing of materials, consultancies, accreditation and validation.
In other words, since the programs come from Britain, students are studying the same materials that a student in the UK will be studying. As well as when they graduate they’ll get both degrees, one from the local country and another from the United Kingdom Open University. One of the other advantages is that Open System provides you with flexible schedule: same courses could be schedule any time from 8am untill 6pm .
Today, HRH Prince Talal Bin Abdulaziz continues to serve as the AOU President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees along with Queen Rania of Jordan, co-chair of AOU’s board of trustees .
From its huge success in the Arab World, they embarked on a continuous campaign of publicizing the philosophy and mission behind the concept.
Five weeks ago they inaugurated the new premises of the Arab Open University (AOU) in Amman.
It was established as a private university for arabic citizens in these countries.
It has the following faculties:
- Faculty of Business Studies
- Faculty of Language Studies (English language)
- Faculty of information Technology & Computing
