Science Connect: a leading initiative to share scientific knowledge
Science Connect (SciCon) is an organization which allows to link scientific ideas and people from Africa and Europe. It was launched in 2007 as a network of organizations involved in higher education, academic cooperation and science based activities between the regions.
SciCon is considered as the single access reference point for international scientific collaboration between Africa and Europe. Its goal is the development of a generative environment for understanding, learning and developing solutions which contribute to the quality of life and focuses on sustainable development. For this reason, it promotes sharing experiences and ideas in order to contribute to better understanding of people and science.
Indeed, in its Community face, everyone is given the opportunity to discuss his ideas in a forum, present his project in a blog and share his work. In this way, social inclusion and participation of all people in this “networked society” are guaranteed. Besides, this organization addresses a wide range of stakeholders including teachers in universities, colleges and training institutions which would be able to share lectures.
The Science Connect Mentor Program is designed to connect researchers and scientific-interested people from all over the world. It permits to meet mentors for educational projects and research questions. Within this part of Science Connect, two roles are differentiated. The first role is the Mentor who is a community-member that has scientific expertise and is willingly to share this with other community members. The second one is the Student who is a member of Science Connect (not necessarily a university learner) and needs scientific information in any field that is provided by a Mentor. This program enables cooperative gaining of scientific knowledge across borders. It gives the opportunity to the mentors and students with similar research interests to find each other and thus to start a mentorship which is a high quality learning process for both sides. In other words, students will have the possibility to get connected to mentors and fellow students to share their experiences in a community of practice. In this way, this institution comes to contribute to a better understanding of people and science.
Furthermore, the organization enhances openness and inclusiveness in order to form a vibrant innovation generating space. Registration is free and allowed to all people. It is the first step in becoming part of the Science Connect community. Then, being an ambassador, every one can support the expansion of this community throughout the world and promotes this initiative as a place for cooperation between academia, universities, students, researchers and all interested persons. The ambassadors promote building the SciCon WIKI with information about universities, projects and people of Africa, Europe and beyond.
Believing in the important role that science plays to facilitate sustainable development of societies along with innovation, Science Connect works to develop social inclusion and participation of all people.
