The 7th International Conference on ICT for Development, Education and Training will be held in Cotonou, Benin, from May 23rd – May 25th, 2012, and the call for papers is now open. A conference and exhibition covering every facet of Information and Communication Technology for education and training, eLearning Africa is an annual event not to be missed, an event that has long attracted the who’s who of African academia, business and government. It is a lively forum for participants to share information, insights and ideas.

ICTs are useful in all spheres of life: in governance, in education (both formal and informal) and in all sectors of economic development, including business, banking, agriculture and the health sector. Learning about how these technologies can be incorporated into all sectors of the economy is a key aim of eLearning Africa, and thus the conference is a gathering of various stakeholders, be they educators and academics, manufacturers, marketers, service providers, legislators and policymakers…Suite

Twenty-two percent of Canadian research universities now subscribe to the Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE), due to its growing popularity among faculty and students.

JoVE is the most recent innovation in academic science journals, producing and publishing peer reviewed experimental procedures in video format. It is the first and only video journal indexed in PubMed and MEDLINE.

“I’ve probably had more graduate students requesting JoVE than any other resource,” said Collections Librarian Jim Brett, at the University of Guelph. “The last time I looked at our research statistics for JoVE, I was surprised to see that they were better than we see with some of our top-tier science journals.”

The University of Guelph first subscribed to JoVE in March 2010, and this year they upgraded their subscription to include Bioengineering. Other subscribers include leading Canadian academic institutions such as the Universities of Toronto, McGill, Ottawa and Saskatchewan.

“Many JoVE video articles describing advanced research methodologies are authored by scientists from leading Canadian institutions,” said JoVE co-founder and CEO, Dr. Moshe Pritsker, “so it’s natural that our content is in big demand there too.”

Health Librarian Mary Chipanshi from the University of Regina said the school librarians evaluated JoVE extensively and ran a free trial before deciding to subscribe. The positive feedback she got from three institutions on the Canadian Medical Library Listserve, including the Universities of Saskatchewan and Calgary, clinched her decision.

“We are advertising it right now,” said Chimpanshi, “and the faculty members are excited.”

Developments in science and technology have the potential to make major contributions to resolving many of the problems that society faces today, from climate change and biodiversity to disease epidemics and public health. But to fully benefit from this potential, children, adults and policy makers need to understand and engage with these developments. By learning the skills of science communication, you can build on your background in science, technology, mathematics or engineering to engage young learners, adults or policy makers with exciting and relevant science.

What is science communication?

Science communication is about supporting effective communication between scientists and other scientists in the same discipline at interdisciplinary boundaries, with policy makers, research funders, industrial sponsors and the general public.

The MSc in Inter-Professional Science Education and Communication (IPSEC) is a dynamic programme at the University of Glasgow that offers you the opportunity to learn the theory and skills required to communicate science confidently and effectively and thus bridge the gap between scientists and those they work with and for, while building a network of colleagues in similar areas, and extending your scientific knowledge.

Who is this programme for?

You might know that you want to work in science communication, or are already a teacher, looking to gain skills and develop networks to make science more exciting for learners. Maybe you know you’d like a research career, and want to learn how to communicate your work effectively.

Alternatively, perhaps you’re not quite sure. Maybe you’re passionate about science but don’t want to work in a lab, or you’re hoping to become a science teacher and want to get a head start on other PGCE applicants.

In fact, science communication offers employment opportunities not only in museums and the media, but also with government, universities and research institutions, with research funders and industry. So the skills you will acquire will be useful whether you choose a job in science education or communication, a traditional career in scientific research or decide to pursue an alternative career linked to science.

What will I get from this programme?

The programme provides you with:

Confidence in communicating science using a range of techniques for effective science communication

Opportunities to practise science communication with a variety of audiences

An understanding of the political, philosophical and social issues related to science education and communication

The possibility of learning exciting developments your scientific discipline

How do previous students view the programme?

Previous students have really enjoyed the programme, as shown by the testimonials that you can read above, and on the programme web pages at www.gla.ac.uk/ipsec. For example, students appreciate the balance between intellectual challenge and practical work, the links with researchers in science, the range of opportunities to get actively involved in public engagement in external activities and science communication conferences and the fact that courses are assessed through projects, practical work and written assignments. They also value the flexibility to select from a variety of optional courses, the choice between developing practical materials or carrying out research for the major project and the fact that there are no compulsory exams. You might be interested in seeing some of the exciting work that students have been involved in. Visit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6r-1j-i1Wo and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56tReWg9tOY&feature=related

Who can I speak to for more information?

For further information, have a look at the programme web pages at www.gla.ac.uk/ipsec or if you have questions that are not answered here, contact the Programme Coordinator, Dr Rebecca Mancy, on +44 (0)141 330 8138 or by emailing r.mancy@educ.gla.ac.uk

How do I apply?

The MSc programme is available for full-time or part-time study, and less intensive diploma and certificate options are also available. You would normally be expected to hold an upper-second honours degree or equivalent in a relevant subject or other corresponding experience. However, if you’re not sure if you meet the requirements, get in touch. In addition, for those whose first language is not English, a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 is required, with no less than 6 in each subskill. UK and EU applications are accepted until Friday 26th August 2010.

You can obtain fees information from www.glasgow.ac.uk/registry/fees and for further information on applying, visit www.glasgow.ac.uk/studying/pg or contact the Postgraduate Admissions Office. tel: +44 (0)141 330 4045 email: pgadmissions@gla.ac.uk
