The Commission has just published the general call for proposals for 2012 for participation in the Lifelong Learning Programme. Through the programme the EU enables people of all ages to gain experience through studies, training or learning abroad and supports co-operation between schools, universities and enterprises in different European countries.

Funding under the 2012 call will follow five priorities:

• Develop strategies for lifelong learning and mobility
• Encourage cooperation between the worlds of education, training and work
• Support initial and continuous training of teachers, trainers and education and training institutions’ managers
• Promote the acquisition of key competences throughout the education and training system
• Promote social inclusion and gender equality in education and training, including the integration of migrants and Roma

These overarching priorities reflect main issues at stake of the political agenda for education and training in the European Union.

The meeting witnessed the confirmation of the names of graduates from the e-School of Business and Quality Management, e-School of Health and Environment Studies, and School of e-Education. During the meeting, the board members emphasized on the need to continue the focus on excellence and innovation that enabled HBMeU to launch new academic programs, implement pilot initiatives, and also ensure the development of innovative standards for enhancing the overall teaching and learning experience.

The meeting discussed the themes and objectives of the Strategic Plan 2011-2015, which aim to enhance quality, establish a culture of innovation and excellence and improve e-learning at the regional level. The meeting was also held in line with the University’s keenness to ensure successful integration of theory and practice as well as enhance HBMeU’s status as the first e-learning University and the premier academic choice in the UAE and Arab World, complementing the directives of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and President of HBMeU.

The meeting also focused on discussing the most effective initiatives that complement the objectives of the university in achieving a new education paradigm and preparing a young generation who are well-equipped to contribute to the country’s growth and development at various levels. The members of the Board of Governors also discussed the proposed program of “Investors in Education” as well as new programs in the area of customer services. It was decided to present an operational plan for the proposed programs during the next meeting.

The International E-Learning Association (IELA) suggests that there are distinguished and significant benefits of education using a virtual platform to improve skills and learning for adult learners and those wishing to take on new qualifications.

Founded in 2007, the IELA aims to serve as a catalyst for the development and exchange of e-learning information among universities, educational institutions, government agencies, funding agencies, conferences and businesses.

The range of training and skills available to people who want to learn is endless and adult learners can embrace new areas in an easy and flexible manner, according to the association.

Furthermore, the IELA cites many benefits of opting for expanding knowledge through the virtual classroom.

Dr David Guralnick, president of the IELA, said: “The traditionally cited benefits of e-learning – such as savings in travel and instructor time and anytime, anywhere access for self-paced courses – are certainly legitimate. But when e-learning is designed well, the benefits can be much greater in terms of job performance improvement, employee engagement and motivation, and company cost savings due to improved performance.”

He added that a well-designed e-learning simulation puts the learner in realistic situations and lets them practice true-to-life tasks. Dr Guralnick gave the example of a customer service learning experience where the user would be engaged and motivated by the task at hand, facing certain relevant problems and can make mistakes without impacting the business.

Such models could help a learner understand not only the task at hand but the wider implications of the sector too.

Dr Guralnick also mentioned that social networking could create a buzz around the e-learning environment where people can share their knowledge and experience with other users.

“Simulation is just one e-learning method, but definitely one that provides a range of advantages,” he said.

The IELA seeks to share and promote policies, procedures, and practices with respect to all matters regarding the use of e-learning.
